Together Training the Next Generation of Top Chefs in Partnership with The Merchant Hotel
The Merchant Hotel has announced a new partnership with Springvale Learning to highlight career opportunities in the hospitality and catering industry and will provide work placements at the Merchant for new learners on the Centre’s Training for Success programme, funded by the Department for the Economy, which starts in September.
The Merchant Hotel, as part of the Beannchor Group, is one of the largest hospitality employers in Northern Ireland and is based in the heart of Belfast city centre’s historic Cathedral Quarter. In partnership with Springvale Learning, the Merchant Hotel are looking for school leavers aged between 16 and 17 years old with an interest in developing their skills and beginning a career in the catering industry.
The successful candidates will complete a full-time Professional Cookery course under Training for Success guidelines and work towards completing a qualification at Level 2 with the opportunity to progress onto the Apprenticeship programme. Springvale Learning graduate, and the Merchant Hotel’s Head Chef, Johnny Leake, will mentor each of the successful candidates throughout the two-year programme.
Johnny Leake, Head Chef of The Merchant Hotel, is looking forward to the opportunity to grow local talent, ‘I have never regretted taking the step into a career in professional cooking. I am passionate about what I do, a passion which was fostered at Springvale Learning under Gordon Birch, and am now able to live that passion through my position as Head Chef at the Merchant in Belfast. I would encourage any young person interested in a career in this industry to come forward, and myself and Gordon will support you every step of the way’.
