Aisling Bursary Success for Springvale Learners!
On Thursday 14th September 2017, the 17th Annual Aisling Bursary Awards took place at St Mary’s University College.
The Aisling Bursaries is an initiative of the West Belfast Partnership Board and the Andersonstown News, with various businesses and organisations in the local community contributing to the Aisling Bursary Fund, helping to develop the skills of young people in the local community.
Every year Springvale donate towards The Aisling Fund. The 2017 Springvale Bursary was awarded to Bobby Joe Edgar and Caroline Callaghan.
Bobby Joe Edgar is a Computer Technology learner who has shown huge potential in his studies at Springvale Learning. He hopes to be able to train as a Computer Repair Engineer and eventually progress to an IT Support Manager and Trainer. He has overcome significant barriers including learning difficulties, physical disability and the death of his father.
Bobby Joe has a natural gift for repairing software and hardware and has flourished since joining Springvale in 2016. His tutor Stephen Gillen explains, ‘Bobby Joe is an extremely hard-working student, with a very clear idea of what he would like to do when he finishes his qualification, I have no doubts that the Springvale bursary will be put to great use and help Bobby Joe develop his skills to work towards becoming an IT manager or trainer.”
A delighted Bobby Joe attended the ceremony with his family and was presented the Springvale Bursary by Dr Alan Blair, CEO at Springvale. Bobby Joe is delighted to receive the award, ‘When I received the letter to say that I was successful, I just couldn’t believe it. I was so excited to have won an award to help me with my studies. I am really interested in filming and plan to put my bursary towards a Mac Book Pro and software needed to help me progress further with my studies and career in IT.”
Bobby Joe currently volunteers for St Gerard’s Educational Resource Centre and Glen Parent Youth Centre and plans to continue to develop the IT capabilities of the community groups that he is involved with in West Belfast.
Caroline Callaghan was the second winner of the Springvale Bursary. Caroline is a former learner at Springvale Learning having completed a Level 1 Hair and Beauty qualification. Caroline believes that the bursary will help her to buy items to start her own part time business in Hair and Beauty working from home.
Caroline’s Former Tutor Kerri O’Neill is delighted with Caroline’s success. She explains, ‘I am so delighted for Caroline. She was a great student and this is an amazing achievement for Caroline and I wish her every success in the future.’
Well done to Bobby Joe and Caroline!
