| Description: | Welders join pieces of metal together by using intense heat. They are responsible for preparing the metal and looking after the tools that weld the metal together. |
| Personal Qualities: | Welders need an ability to work with great accuracy, to have very steady hands, to be able to concentrate on the weld for the length of a run (up to five minutes), to have good eyesight and good hearing (to detect variations in the buzz and crackle of the arc). They need to be physically fit to lift and carry equipment, climb ladders and crawl into cramped spaces. Welders must be able to work without close supervision, must be able to follow technical instructions carefully and follow health and safety procedures at all times. They need good hand and eye co-ordination, technical knowledge about the different materials you might use with good communication skills to work with other craftspeople such as sheet metal workers and platers. |
